How To Make Fishing Lures

In this guide, we show you how to make fishing lures with our range of Fishing Lure Moulds.

Place your mould on 2 pieces of wood to help keep the mould level.

If you intend to use glitter to your lure, sprinkle a small amount into the bottom of the mould cavity. (Food Powders can be used instead of glitter, such as coffee, desiccated coconut, gravy powder etc.)

If you intend to put in a trace line and hook this can also be placed into the mould cavity, a small piece of blue tack/plasticine can hold the trace in place, on the side of the cavity.

Now pour your mixture into the cavity trying to avoid any air bubbles. A piece of tape or cocktail stick may be needed to keep the hook protruded out of the mixture, until dry.

More than one colour can be used at the same time if desired. Tap the mould lightly to remove any air pockets or voids.

Sprinkle any more glitter if so desired. Leave to set until dry.

Lures can be used directly on the hook, without the need to use a trace.

Drying time will vary depending on air temperature and the thickness of lure. Drying times can take from an hour up to 2 days dependant on what type of mixture you are using.  Trim Lure if required.

Tips:

  • If you are using a hot mixture, make sure it has cooled down sufficiently before being poured into the mould, to prevent damage to the mould.
  • Talcum powder can be sprinkled over the lure before being demoulded to stop it initially sticking to itself.
  • Flavour enhancer can be sprayed onto the finished lure for added smell.

Warning:  These moulds must not be placed in ovens or microwaves.

Mixtures/Recipes:

Here are a couple of mixtures/recipes that can be used, but there are many others available.

A Gelatine Viscose Mix

  • ½ Teaspoon Glycerol,
  • 4 Teaspoons Gelatine Powder
  • ¼ Cup of Water

Mix together the ingredients and stir until there are no lumps formed. Heat the mixture until it is hot, remove from the heat and keep stirring until the mixture cools slightly, and then pour the mixture into the mould. Leave to Set.

Mozzarella Cheese Mix

One of the quickest and easiest ways to fill these moulds can be by using cheese

Mozzarella Cheese has been found to be ideal due to its easy melting and elasticity

Adding small pieces of Bacon or Ham into the Cheese can give you excellent bait which is not only bright in colour but can also give off an enticing aroma

Just melt cheese in a suitable container in a Microwave Oven, pour into the mould cavity and push cheese into the mould with a flat-bladed knife and then place into the freezer for 10 minutes to produce your very own CHEESE GRUBS –   Warning: Hot Cheese Can Burn – Please Take Safety Precautions.

Plastisol

Plastisol is often used in the making of fishing lures and can be purchased online.
